The vSMS is a virtual appliance compressed and packaged according to the requirements for Microsoft Hyper-V.
A supported Hyper-V server environment must already be set up before you can install and use the vSMS solution. For more information, see System requirements.

Procedure

  1. Download and unzip the vSMS compressed package.
  2. Use the Windows Hyper-V manager client software to connect to the Hyper-V server where you want to deploy the vSMS.
  3. Select the Hyper-V server where you want to deploy the vSMS.
  4. Under the Actions panel, click Import Virtual Machine:
    1. For Locate Folder, select the unzipped, vSMS package directory containing the three subdirectories (Snapshots, Virtual Hard Disks and Virtual Machines).
    2. For Select Virtual Machine, select the virtual machine name.
    3. For Choose Import Type, select one of the following options:
      • Register the virtual machine in-place (use the existing unique ID): Uses the directory that you already created.
      • Restore the virtual machine (use the existing ID): Moves the files to a new location.
      • (Recommended) Copy the virtual machine (create a new unique ID): Copies the files to a new location.

    4. For Choose Destination, change the Hyper-V locations as needed.
    5. For Choose Storage Folders, change the virtual hard disk location as needed.
  5. Review the summary and select Finish to start the import.
    It should take a few minutes to import the vSMS in the Windows Hyper-V manager client.
  6. We recommend reviewing the following settings after the vSMS is deployed and before you start the vSMS:
    • Hard Drive settings: The vSMS hard drive file size is delivered with a 300 GB disk size and a dynamically expanding virtual hard disk. These settings can be modified, depending on the needs of your environment.

      We recommend increasing the disk size to 600 GB for more storage and changing the disk type to Fixed to improve performance.
      To modify the hard drive:
      1. Select the vSMS.
      2. Click Settings in the Actions panel.
      3. In the Hardware panel, under SCSI Controller, select Hard Drive.
      4. Under Virtual hard disk, select Edit.
      From the Edit Virtual Hard Disk Wizard, you can convert or expand the disk size of the hard drive, depending on the needs of your environment. See Microsoft Hyper-V documentation for more information.
    • Processor settings: The vSMS is delivered with 12 virtual processors. You can modify the number of processors by navigating to Settings → Processor.
    • Memory settings: The vSMS default memory is 32 GB. You can modify the memory by navigating to Settings → Memory.

      We recommend that you do not enable the Dynamic Memory setting.
    • Network settings: Assign the first network interface to the virtual network with access to the security devices you want the vSMS to manage.
      1. Select Virtual Switch Manager under the Actions panel to configure the virtual switch.
      2. Specify the switch configuration for the first network interface for the vSMS.
        1. Select the vSMS.
        2. Click Settings in the Actions panel.
        3. In the Hardware panel, select NIC1.
        4. Specify the switch configuration.
  7. After the vSMS is deployed and all settings have been modified for your environment, click Start from the Actions panel. When the virtual machine is powered on, you can open a console to monitor the booting of the guest operating system. To do this, right-click the vSMS and select Connect.
