About URL Access Control

URL Blocking allows you to restrict access to specific Internet sites based on the properties of the URL—a keyword in the string, an exact string, an entire domain, or a subdomain. URL Blocking is global and URL driven—if a URL is blocked, it is blocked for the entire organization. By contrast, URL Filtering is policy-based and content driven—different policies can apply to different groups or organizations.

URL Blocking is especially useful as a rapid first response during a sudden Internet-threat outbreak. Examples include recent worms and orchestrated DoS (Denial of Service) attacks.

URL Blocking also scans for rogue URLs using Trend Micro's PhishTrap, and checks outbound Web requests for sites associated with spyware schemes. Both are common side-effects of a Trojan attack (when a malicious program with an innocuous name "drops" files on a host computer which then establishes contact with a remote server, usually to steal data or to hijack the host).
