Boot Volume Backup Files Parent topic

In the event that your boot volume or computer becomes damaged in the future, SecureCloud technical support can assist you by using a Recovery Tool. To access a corrupted boot volume and recover it for decryption, technical support will require some additional information. Every time a boot volume completes encryption, SecureCloud updates a boot volume backup file, boot_essentions.backup, that has the additional information technical support will use when attempting to recover your boot volume. This backup file contains the following information:
  • SecureCloud master boot record (MBR)
  • Boot volume original MBR
  • Boot volume Scratch Space

If SecureCloud is unable to decrypt a boot volume, do not modify or configure the device. Contact technical support for more information.
Trend Micro strongly recommends that you copy the boot volume backup file immediately after every boot volume encryption. Store the backup file in any location that you will be able to access if the boot volume becomes inaccessible.
The boot volume backup file can be found in the following paths:
  • On Microsoft Windows, the backup file path is C:\Program Files (x86)\Trend Micro\SecureCloud\Agent\da\boot_essentials.backup
  • On Linux, the backup file path is /var/lib/securecloud/da/boot_essentials.backup

Note
Depending on the amount of damage to a boot volume, Trend Micro may be unable to recover some or all of the data lost, even with the use of the Recovery Tool.
