What is ICAP Mode?

You can install IWSVA—in the so-called "ICAP mode"—to work with many Internet Content Adaptation Protocol (ICAP) v1.0 compliant proxy servers, however, you need to make the choice before installation.

When in ICAP mode, the ICAP proxy will forward HTTP responses and requests to IWSVA and keep track of the results.

ICAP includes the following methods:

For full compatibility with IWSVA, clients need to set both the Request Modification and Response Modification modes.

Background

ICAP was introduced in response to the fast growth of proxy services on the Internet. As proxy servers became increasingly complicated and began including functions such as translation, virus filtering, and caching, the need to distribute the load across multiple machines arose. In 1999, the ICAP Forum was established to introduce a standard protocol for communication between proxy-solutions, and service-providers such as IWSVA.
